Hi folks. I’ve had a rather hectic weekend here so please excuse my absence during that time. I did promise a post but have been so caught up with things that I decided to save it for Monday and post the results of the giveaway at the same time, so I won’t waffle – I know why you’re all here!
It’s fun to do giveaways, but I always feel kind of bad announcing the winners. Of course, the winners are very worthy; what about the people who don’t win though? I read touching remarks about how much the person would love the item in question, the things they’d do with it… I tell you, by the time I go to pick the numbers, I’m really rooting for them. Then the results come in and I find they didn’t win… damn it guys, it makes me feel genuinely sad! Anyway – I’m sorry – not everyone can win, and if you didn’t, I hope you’re not too upset and will continue to participate in future giveaways. Please join me in congratulating the two winners though – click the box below to expand it and view the winners!

For the Le Creuset Cocottes:
The 19th qualifying comment was: Laura, from Tutti Dolci
~~~
For the “What’s a Cook To Do” Book:
The 82nd qualifying comment was: BakingAddict from The More than Occasional Baker
Congratulations to both of you – I’ll be in touch shortly with full details!
As for today’s recipe – first off, I should admit that these aren’t necessarily any easier than other scone recipes you might have followed before… I just rather liked the rhyming title. I’ve adapted my other scone recipe to include a slightly less than healthy dosing of cheese and these are just the perfect accompaniment to a soup we had the other night. So much for summer… it seems to have cooled down a bit here right now!
I hope you have a wonderful week – I’m greatly looking forward to next Friday. I’ll be having a visit from not only my parents, from England, on the then, and then a visit from my sister and little niece, on the Monday, all the way from China. I tell you – it’s going to be quite the family reunion, and when we all live as spread out as we do, it’s rather exciting to all be together again, even if it will just be for a few days!
I’ll be back on Thursday with a Swedish recipe which wasn’t a disaster (unlike my escapades from a few weeks ago) – until then, take care everyone π
Cheese Scones
[learn_more caption=”Video Recipe”]
Ingredients
- 230g Plain Flour (I used Kamut)Β + extra for dusting
- 1 tsp Cayenne Pepper
- 2tsp Baking Powder
- 60g Butter
- 100ml Milk
- 60ml Water
- 200g tasty Cheese, like Gruyère, grated
Instructions
- Start off by preheating your oven to 220 degrees Celsius. Combine the Flour, Cayenne Pepper and Baking Powder in a bowl and then transfer to aΒ food processor. Add in the butter and blitz until the butter has been broken down and the mixture resembles bread-crumbs. Transfer back to the mixing bowl and then stir in the grated cheese before finally adding the milk and water and mixing to form a dough. Turn out onto a floured surface and roll out to a thickness of about 2cm. Cut into rounds and arrange on a lightly greased baking tray.
- Place into the preheated oven and bake for about 10 minutes until risen and golden brown. Some delicious variations on this recipe would include chopped chives or spring onions, added at the same time as the cheese. Enjoy your cheese scones with a good bowl of soup!
ping says
Magic word … Cheese!! I’m a cheesarian … or in my past life, a mouse.
Pass me the clotted cream and jam, thank you!
Congrats to the 2 winners!
Charles says
Thanks Ping – love that word: “Cheesarian”, haha – too true π
Green Dragonette says
Oh I do like cheese scones. Bring back memories of making them for my βOβ level Home Economics exam. It wasnβt until after we had left the room for the examiners to taste our final dishes that I remembered with horror that I had forgotten to add the cheese to my scones…somehow they must have taken pity on me as I still somehow got an βAβ…
Charles says
Hi GD – Oh no, forgot to put in the cheese? π Well, I’m sure they still tasted great to be honest. Did everyone make cheese scones? If it was just you, maybe the examiner didn’t realised they were supposed to have cheese π
Green Dragonette says
No, the cheese scones were one of the compulsory exam items that everybody had to make so not too sure how I got away with it!!
A_Boleyn says
Congratulations to the two lucky winners. I’ll have to comfort myself with some refreshingly cold ice cream in all this hot weather. π
I’m amazed at the darker colour the kamut flour gives the scones and the edges of the scone in your pictures makes it look like they have multiple layers. Incidentally, I have that same biscuit cutter though mine is a lot more beat up than yours.
Charles says
Hi A_ – sorry you didn’t win π Next time perhaps! You’re right, now you mention it… the pic makes it look like it’s loads of layers… looks really cool and flakey.
Eva says
I know how you feel Charles, this weekend just flew by and I’m exhausted! 4hours of gardening trying to get the weeds and the English ivy under control! And the dinner party on Saturday had me cooking all day. Sigh, maybe work will be relaxing!!!
Cheese scones are one of my fav’s and I love that you added cayenne β it really goes well with the cheese. I look forward to seeing the soup you made with it.
Hope you have a wonderful time with your parents and sister.
Charles says
Thanks Eva – of course, the one “down side” of my family coming over is that I still won’t be able to have a proper relax. Maybe I can sneak in a little lie-in on Sunday morning! π
Kelly @ Inspired Edibles says
Charles, you’re too sweet expressing your concern for us losers (haha! :)), but seriously, I know what you mean… in a good world, everyone would come away with the win. Alas, ce n’est pas possible. Thank you for the great contest and a big congrats to today’s lucky winners!
Love the idea of cheesy scones and the cayenne is simply perfect here. I can just imagine these puppies fresh out of the oven smothered in butter… oh my…(love your biscuit cutters!).
Kelly @ Inspired Edibles says
Meant to also wish you a great visit with your family… I didn’t know you had a sister; how nice!
Charles says
Thanks so much Kelly – yeah, she’s almost 5 years older than me. I’m sure we used to torment each other terribly when we were kids π
The only problem with the cookie cutter – when you press your palm flat over the top it creates an air-tight seal so you can’t push the cutter in properly and it kind of pushes into your skin as well, but it’s nice to have one with 2 sides!
Sharyn Dimmick says
These scones look delicious, Charles — wish I had some to eat with all of my rhubarb experiments (might have to actually make some). I, too, have the same biscuit cutter, part of a set of three in different sizes. I figure when I don’t win a giveaway it wasn’t meant to be. Enjoy your family visit.
Charles says
Thanks Sharyn and sorry you didn’t win – next time perhaps!
Minnie(@thelady8home) says
Congratulations to Laura and Bakingaddict :))
Why feel bad? We all gave a try and two got lucky. Love the cheesy bites. I can imagine how exciting it’s going to be with your parents, sister and niece. Enjoy!
Charles says
Thanks Minnie – you’re right… everyone has a go, and a chance of winning, but I guess I just want everyone to win, lol π
Chica Andaluza says
Congrats to the winners..not envious at all π Well, maybe if I make myself a batch of these gorgeous scones and then eat them all I may begin to feel a little better π
Charles says
Haha, sounds like a good recovery plan π
Coffee and Crumpets says
Mmmm…scones and cheese, yum. Looks like a great family reunion for you ahead. Do you do all the cooking when folks visit? I am about to be inundated by guests very soon too and am all in a tizzy because of the time in the kitchen I am going to have to spend. I could do with some scones for breakfast right about now.
Charles says
Hi C&C – I do indeed do all the cooking when guests are here… my legs get quite tired and I end up feeling like I’ve spent most of the time in the kitchen so this time I’m going to try and not spend so long cooking.
Nada says
Yes to that! I’m preparing a mini-buffet for tomorrow.. you gave me one more thing to do..
Charles says
Thanks Nada – let me know if you give them a try π
kitchenriffs says
Rhyming titles work for me! Alliterative ones too – one of these days I’m going to write up a recipe for Tandoori Tuna just because it’s fun to say! Anyway, anything with cayenne pepper gets my attention (I like spicy), but particularly in baked goods – it works really well, IMO. Nice recipe, great blog – I found you through your interview with Maureen. Happy to have found you – I’ll be back.
Charles says
Thanks so much kitchenriffs – you’re right… cayenne pepper works fantastically well in things like bread and scones – pleased to meet you! π
Barb @ Profiteroles & Ponytails says
Soup and scones — another one of my favourites. I do hope that you have a wonderful time with all of your family visitors. They must really look forward to their visits knowing what a wonderful cook you are Charles. Do you get special requests for items that have been posted on your blog? Perhaps you spend your time touring around rather than cooking — that sometimes happens here!
Charles says
Hi Barb, oh yes – requests are not uncommon… mainly people want the cinnamon buns, lol π
This time I’m going to try and simplify things and not spend quite so long in the kitchen!
Sissi says
You know Charles, I have never had scones in my whole life! I have heard so much about them, have read in several British cookery books, but never tasted. Yours look so delicious and irresistible (I can imagine I would devour all the batch on my own) I feel I really miss something important. Grated cheese and chili pepper in soft cute snacks…
Congratulations to the winners!
Charles says
Hi Sissi – I can’t believe you never had a scone! You have to fix that as soon as possible – either the type you eat with cream and jam or this cheesey one for soup…. it’s a delicious little bite π
Sissi says
Oh, and I would have forgotten: have a lovely time with your family and say hello to your mum, whose kind comments made me very happy π
Charles says
Ah, thank you – I certainly will π
Thebigfatnoodle says
Mmmmmmm, cheese scones…. I love them best with a thick slice of bacon wedged between them, LOL! π
Charles says
Hahaha, sounds perfectly ok to me! π
shuhan says
Ooh I love this variation using kamut flour! Good to know you can still achieve a good result with using a healthier ancient grain.
And Charles, don;t ever feel bad! You’re so fantastic and awesome to even do these giveaways, and I still remember your generosity last Christmas (the cast iron pot sits happily in my kitchen as I speak).
Charles says
Thanks so much Shuhan, you’re too kind. The kamut gave them a beautiful colour and slightly rougher consistency, I was really pleased in the end – might try with some linseed flour next time too π
Laura (Tutti Dolci) says
How exciting, thank you so much Charles!! π I love your cheesy scones, they look deliciously golden!
Charles says
Thanks Laura and you’re more than welcome π
bakingaddict says
Cheese scones were the first scones I ever made. I definitely won’y say no to your scones – they look much better than mine. Thanks for picking me as the winner of your giveaway – how exciting!!
Charles says
Thanks BA – I’m sure they don’t look better although I’m glad I didn’t do what Green Dragonette did in an earlier comment and forgot the cheese… oops π
mjskit says
Love your scones, especially the use of the Gruyere! I bet that makes a really, really tasty scones! Congratulations to the giveaway winners! Hope you have a great week as well and a very exciting family reunion! How fun is that?!?!
Charles says
Thanks MJ – indeed, the gruyere was a fantastic addition – really tasty!
Hotly Spiced says
I’m distraught! I was sure I’d be a winner. I’m just wiping away my tears. And to get the news when we’re having a long weekend where it’s done nothing but resemble Noah’s Flood outside (minus one ark and pairs of animals) – it’s too much! Never mind, I’m sure those winners were very deserving. Your scones look lovely and I’m sure you’ll be making lots of these with all your visitors. I have a sister living in China too. Mine’s in Beijing. And she’ll be here with her three children in a couple of weeks. I have another sister in the USA who leaves for London next Monday where she has 12 wks work so we are a bit like you – quite spread out. Enjoy the time with your family Charles xx
Charles says
Thanks Charlie – don’t be too distraught though π
Maybe you’ll have better luck in a future giveaway! It’s tough with family so spread out isn’t it? We’re all over the place – China, Sweden, England, France… makes the few days or weeks each year we can spend with each other all the more precious!
Just A Smidgen says
Oh, I think that’s why I’ve never run a contest yet… I’d be sifting through going.. “what about her” “what about him, surely he should win”, lol. In any case.. from this side of things, I’m happy for the two who won!! But I think we’ve all won in the end with this lovely scone recipe.. I could use a new scone..for tomorrow’s dinner I think!! xo Smidge
Charles says
Hi Smidge – it’s tough, yeah… best thing to do is close your eyes and leave it in the “lap of the Gods” (or rather the lap of random.org!).
Let me know if you give them a try π
Sawsan (chef in disguise) says
Congratulations to the winners Charles and I hope you have a wonderful time with your family
Enjoy every minute of it
I just love scones and adding cheese to them makes them even more tempting
Charles says
Thanks so much Sawsan – they really are transformed from a tea-time snack to a real accompaniment for a light meal with the addition of cheese π
Glamorous Glutton says
What a lovely week you’ve got ahead of you. I love cheese scones but haven’t made them for years and I’m sure they didn’t look as good as yours. Far too much kneading and messing about I expect. I’ve seen Kamut flour in the supermarket but until now not really known what it is for. Thanks for the prod and I’m sure I will use it in baking now as it seems to be so much healthier. GG
Charles says
Thanks GG – I didn’t actually knead these at all – you don’t really need to manipulate the dough very much at all!
I’d definitely give kamut a try – it’s really yummy π
Nami | Just One Cookbook says
Congrats to the winners! Oh I know what you mean. I can’t handle picking the winners by clicking with my own hand, so I let my family do it for me. Yes, my husband, son, and daughter taking turns. It’s quite funny scene when we pick the winners. But that way I won’t be too emotional and I feel it’s no special emotion attach to the giveaways. LOL!
Anyway, sounds like you will have an awesome family time this weekend! Have fun! It’s summer after all, and we do best to keep up what we love. π
Your cheesy scones surprised me because ingredients are so simple. I’m amazed how “baking” does with basic items. It’s quite an magic!
Charles says
Thanks Nami – yeah, it’s best to just close your eyes and not think about it. I wish everyone could win, but I guess people can always enter the next time! π
The ingredients are simple indeed – Next time I make them I’m going to add chopped scallions and possibly olives I think – should be wonderful!
The Squishy Monster says
These Scones look fabulous and then, the addition of Gruyere takes it over the top! Love it π
Charles says
Thanks Squishy π
Norma Chang says
If everyone wins then that’s not a contest. Congrats to the winner.
Where does your sister live in China? Do you visit her there?
I had company for a week and before they arrived I announced that for breakfast and lunch we can/will eat at home but for dinner we were eating out every night. Worked out well as this allowed us to spend more quality time visiting and catching up.
Have a wonderful family reunion.
Charles says
Hi Norma – my sister lives in Wenzhou – I visited her many years ago, in 2000. At the time, the city was developing a lot, lots of construction etc… I can’t imagine how different it must be now. I had the chance to visit Hangzhou as well during my trip… that’s a really beautiful place!
It’s a great idea to eat dinner out each day – I think we might try and do something like that, although I do like doing “grand” dinners at home too π
Norma Chang says
Sounds like your sister resides permanently in China. Guess it is time for another visit from you.
Since we do not get together very often I decided it was better to spend time with company instead of the kitchen.
Charles says
Indeed she does – I’d love to go back there again, it’s just a question of finding the time – after all, China isn’t really somewhere you can “hop over for the weekend” to π
Minnie(@thelady8home) says
Hey Charles, I’ve nominated you for the FoodStories Award for Excellence in Storytelling π
http://www.thelady8home.com/2012/06/13/foodstories-nominee-for-june/
Good luck!!
Charles says
Thanks Minnie π
Caroline says
Congrats to the giveaway winners! And these scones sound delicious! I’m not usually one to pick up a scone if it’s sitting in front of me, but if there’s cheese involved, count me in. π
Charles says
As Ping said above – I guess you’d classify yourself as a “cheesarian” too then? π
Hope you’re having a good day Caroline π
Karen (Back Road Journal) says
I like easy peasy anything when it involves the kitchen. The scones are beautiful! Have a wonderful visit with your family.
Charles says
Thanks Karen – definitely… sometimes its nice to labour a bit in the kitchen but at other times, all you want is to be able to churn something out as fast as possible!
Kitchen Belleicious says
they look divine. i love scones especially savory ones! not to mention the fact they are easy is a plus!
Charles says
Thanks KB – I made them again recently with chopped olives and scallions… they were SO good… strongly recommended!
Kristy says
Your scones look fabulous Charles! I’ve never made scones before. I’m not sure why they intimidate me. I do love rolling dough and making biscuits is always fun. Perhaps it’s the name that intimidates me. LOL. But oh….I just might have to make these. I mean Gruyere! YUM! One of my favorites. π Have a wonderful visit with your family. I know how special that time is when you live so far apart. We lived away from our family for a stretch and it made the time we got together so much more special and fun. Enjoy! π
Charles says
Thanks Kristy – my parents have gone now, but my sister and niece are still here. Doesn’t time fly though. My parents were here for 5 days in total but they whizzed by. I’m looking forward to catching up with a bit of sleep on Saturday… I’m exhausted!
Debra Kapellakis says
Almost anything with cheese in it is good for me. π I sure do thank you for your empathy but there can be only a certain amout of winners with so many entries. π Have a great weekend and thank you for yet another must try recipe! π
Charles says
Thanks Debra – you’re right of course… if everyone won, well, then it wouldn’t really be much point would it?
betsyb says
Congrats to the winners! So generous of you to do a giveaway Charles. I’ve always wanted a recipe for gruyere scones. We have a local bakery that makes amazing ones, but yours look equally delicious…and here’s the recipe! Thank you so much for sharing!
Charles says
Hi Betsy, I made these the other day with chopped olives and green onions inside and REALLY recommend that version a lot… they were amazing!
Greg says
A belated congrats on your 200th post. These look amazing. I love gruyere in breads.
Charles says
Thanks a lot Greg, and here’s looking forward to 200 more (and then some!)
Beth says
Those scones look fantastic! I recently fell in love with scones, and have made them a few times – all with cheese in them. I love how the mild cheese flavor and the buttery scone mix. I’ve also put dried cherries in them, which is a fantastic burst of flavor. These look delicious and I definitely want to make them soon!
Charles says
Thanks Beth – cherries sounds like an interesting bit of zing. I reckon one could add some curry powder and raisins too… that would be pretty nice!
Beth says
ooomg, curry and raisins would be fantastic. I also have both of those ingredients – I see scones in my near future!
Marianna says
I would so be tempted to add more cheese just to make it as cheesy as possible, preferably so the cheese would still be melting inside when you eat it…
Now I’m hungry (
Charles says
I actually did that… in a later batch I made I added chopped spring onions, chopped olives and SO much cheese that it affected the structural integrity of the scone. They collapsed a bit during baking because of all the cheese inside but my God they were good!
nipponnin says
Very nice pics! …Ah…I’m not fun of Vegemite though I’m curious how this scones taste. Vegemite remind us the Australia trip. We had a wonderful time there. I hope I could go there again.
Congratulations on your sister’s wedding!
